What is "Sensory Integration"?
Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) formerly described as sensory integration, is the ability of our nervous system to take in information from our own bodies and the environment, process that information, and then make an appropriate response.
Sensory processing is like your brain’s super highway, with information whizzing by each second in an organized, yet fast paced way. Your brain then takes in the information and helps you make an appropriate motor response. For example, if you are getting ready to push a door open, your body instantaneously responds to the weight of the door and your body knows when to push hard on a heavy door, or when to push gently on a light door. In short, SPD affects the way individuals process information from the five senses, as well as sense of balance, movement and position in space.
